How Our Panel of Judges Evaluate Question Difficulty

Our panel of judges uses these criteria to fairly evaluate question difficulty across all events:

Obscurity & Familiarity

Questions about well-known subjects are rated easier than those on obscure topics. The judges consider how likely an average person would be familiar with the subject matter.

Specialized Knowledge

Questions requiring specific expertise in a field (like advanced physics or niche hobbies) receive higher difficulty scores than those drawing on general knowledge.

Cultural & Geographic Context

The judges account for regional knowledge biases. Questions that might be common knowledge in one region but obscure elsewhere are carefully calibrated for fairness.

Recency & Newsworthiness

Current events are evaluated based on their prominence in media coverage. Breaking news gets a lower difficulty rating than obscure recent developments.

Question Format

Question formats directly impact difficulty scores. Multiple-choice questions are rated easier than open-ended ones. Fill-in-the-blank, multi-part answers, and questions requiring lateral thinking receive progressively higher difficulty ratings.

This comprehensive evaluation ensures that teams are rewarded for answering truly challenging questions, regardless of which event they attend, creating a fair playing field for all competitors.
